Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has recently implemented several changes while applying for a Canadian study permit. These changes directly impact many candidates seeking expedited processing through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) in 2024. The IRCC introduced these modifications to actively strengthen the integrity of Canada's international student program.
Since the application process requires a lot of preparation, this article will explain how to apply for a study permit through the SDS program effectively.
1. Eligibility For SDS
At first, you must find out if you are eligible for the SDS program. Certain countries have the benefit of streamlined processing for their study permits through SDS. IRCC issues the study permit for those students in 20 days. Here is the list of the countries:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Brazil
- China
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Philippines
- Senegal
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Vietnam
Students applying from other countries not included in the above list cannot apply through the SDS program. You can still apply for the study permit. As per IRCC, the processing time for the application process will take approximately ten weeks.
2. Letter of Acceptance (LoA)
Another crucial step is obtaining a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in any authorised Canadian Institution. DLIs are the educational institutions in Canada authorised to admit international students. You may find the list of the DLIs on the IRCC website.
3. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
On January 22, 2024, PAL became a mandatory requirement for international students seeking approval for their study permit. PAL was introduced to ensure that designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada do not exceed their capacity for admitting international students.
Notably, applicants to master's programs, PhD programs, primary school, or secondary school are exempt from needing a PAL for their SDS application.
The process for obtaining a PAL varies depending on the location of your DLI, with each Canadian province creating its system.
4. Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
You must submit a GIC of CAD 20,635 as proof of financial stability while studying in Canada. After you deposit the required CAD 20,635 into your GIC account, the funds will be held until your arrival in Canada.
Upon your arrival, the GIC will release an initial lump sum payment to you. Then, over the next 10 to 12 months, you will receive regular instalments of the remaining balance. This arrangement ensures you have access to the necessary funds to support your expenses throughout your study period in Canada. Also, note that the requirements for Quebec differ from the rest of the provinces in Canada. If you are planning to study in Quebec, please refer to the official website of the Canadian government.
5. Supporting Documents
For your SDS application, you must submit the following supporting documents:
- Letter of Acceptance from DLI
- Proof of First-year tuition fee payment
- Language test results within two years
- CAD 20,635 GIC documentation
- Proof of travel expense coverage
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) copy
- Police certificate (if needed)
- Upfront medical exam confirmation (if applicable)
- Recent school transcript(s)
- Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) attestation (for Quebec students only)
Also, you may check the official website of the IRCC for the complete and updated required document lists.
6. Submission of your Application
After gathering the necessary documents and fulfilling the conditions, you can submit your study permit application to IRCC. Once your application is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry letter (also known as an introduction letter). If you don't have a printed letter, you may also use an e-version to the visa officer upon arrival in Canada, which will officially confirm your study permit approval.
Now, what else are you waiting for? It is the right time to kick-start your journey as an international student in Canada. Prepare yourself to get immersed in the multi-cultural land with stunning landscapes. As an international student, experience quality education and seize the endless opportunities awaiting you.
