GMAT – Exam Preparation Overview

What is GMAT?

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer-based adaptive standardized assessment conducted to test the competency of students aspiring to get admission to business schools and pursue business management programs such as MBA. The test comprises four sections and measures the candidate's skills in analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative aptitude, and verbal reasoning. 

Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) organizes the test. GMAT score is one of the factors, including academic record, work experience etc., considered for admission requirements for more than 2,400 universities and organizations in 110 nations worldwide. The score validity of the GMAT is for five years. A candidate can take the test 8 times in total, and within 12 months, the candidate can appear for the test 5 times; however, in any 16 days cannot apply more than once.

Total Test Duration: 3 hours, 7 minutes

Sections: 4

Total Questions: 80

Score Range: 200 – 800

Test Fee: US $275 (Test Centre); US $300 (Online)

Additional Fees for test score reporting: US $35

Analytical Writing Assessment: This section contains one analysis of an argument essay question with a time limit of 30 minutes. The score range is 0 – 6.

Quantitative Reasoning: This section has two parts: problem-solving and data sufficiency. There are 31 questions from the areas of elementary algebra, concepts of geometry, word problems and arithmetic, with a time limit of 62 minutes and a score range of 6 – 51.

Verbal Reasoning: This section comprises 36 questions with a time limit of 65 minutes and a score range of 6 – 51. The type of questions in this section includes sentence correction, critical reasoning and reading comprehension.

Integrated Reasoning: This section comprises 12 questions with a time limit of 30 minutes and a score range of 1 - 8. The questions in this section include Table Analysis, Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis.

  • Test centre: Once you complete your exam, you will get a preview of your unofficial score, which you can accept or cancel. If neither option is selected, then the score gets cancelled. You also have the option to cancel the score up to 72 hours after completing the test with applicable fees.

     Online: Once you complete your exam, you will get a preview of your unofficial score, which you can accept or cancel. Screenshots, photos or writing down of the score is not allowed.

  • You will be considered absent if you fail to appear for the test. An absent candidate will not get a refund.

  • The scores are sent to the registered mail id of the candidate within 20 days after the test.

  • No, there is no difference in the exam pattern for tests administered offline and online.

  • Yes, you can reschedule or cancel the test by Clicking the Reschedule or Cancel button on your account. The test can be rescheduled or cancelled 24 hours before the exam appointment by paying the applicable fees.

  • Test Centre: Valid Passport and letter of appointment confirmation. You cannot bring calculators; a calculator will only be given during the Integrated Reasoning section. However, the candidate will be given noticeboards and markers during the exam.

    Online: Appropriate ID, the same as uploaded during test registration, should be presented to the online proctor.

  • The test is conducted offline at the nearest test centers and online.
