The CAEL Test exclusively evaluates language skills related to academic topics and situations found in Canadian post-secondary institutions. It operates entirely in a computerized format, providing flexibility for individuals to take the exam either at a testing centre or remotely from the convenience of their homes. There is no pass or fail for the CAEL test. It provides scores for each component and an overall band score. Writing: The writing section of the CAEL test consists of two parts. In the first part (60-70 minutes), candidates respond in writing to comprehension questions, divided into three sections based on a long reading passage, a long listening passage, and a writing question. The second part (40-45 minutes) involves answering comprehension questions and providing written responses, divided into sections with long reading and listening passages, concluding with a single writing question for a short answer.

Speaking:Candidates provide oral responses to questions presented on the screen. The segment includes three questions, with one focused on interpreting a graph, map, or diagram. This component assesses the ability to articulate thoughts and ideas verbally, incorporating visual elements for a comprehensive evaluation of language proficiency. Candidates speak into a microphone without the requirement to face a test official.
